The story of Larimar’s modern discovery dates back to 1916, when a priest, Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, requested permission to mine a mysterious blue rock in the Dominican Republic. However, his request was denied, and the stone remained hidden for decades.

It wasn’t until 1974 that Larimar was rediscovered by Miguel Méndez, a Dominican local, and Norman Rilling, a Peace Corps volunteer. They found the stunning blue stones washed up along the beaches of Barahona, a coastal province in the Dominican Republic. Following the river upstream, they traced the gemstone back to the Bahoruco Mountain Range, the only known source of Larimar in the world.

The Name "Larimar" – A Personal Touch

Miguel Méndez named the stone "Larimar" by combining two meaningful words:
🔹 "Lari" – from his daughter’s name, Larissa.
🔹 "Mar" – the Spanish word for sea, inspired by the stone’s resemblance to the Caribbean waters.

This poetic name perfectly captures the essence of Larimar—a stone that embodies the beauty and

tranquility of the ocean.
